One in 133 people in North America have a condition called Celiac disease. People with this condition cannot eat gluten and, as a result, have a tough time eating out. Staff at restaurants have to be extremely careful when preparing food as cross-contamination is a common issue. Thankfully the Kelowna Chapter of the Canadian Celiac Association has a list of Celiac friendly eating establishments. If you are, or you know, a "Celiac" use this list and thank the restaurants for their diligence!
Bernard Ave. [Main Street]
Saigon [270 Bernard Ave-main street-not far from the lake] Make sure you have the rice noodles. Vietnamese and Chinese food available],
Siam Orchid Thai, 270 Bernard [near the lake end of Bernard] knowledgeable. Warning some of the foods are VERY spicy!
Le Triskell, 467 Bernard Ave. This is a Buckwheat crepe place [Britanny French] Very knowledgeable about Celiac!
Nishis 272 Bernard Ave.
Moo Lix Ice Cream Parlour on Bernard (near the sails) claim that their ice cream is gluten free except for the obvious flavours such as 'cookies and cream'.
Off Bernard Ave.
Mamma Rosa 561 Lawrence Ave [behind Town Centre Mall] All their sauces are GF and they have rice noodles on the menu.
Mon Thong 1530 Water Street South just off Bernard Ave
The Grand Bay Café [in the Grand Hotel] north off Bernard at 1300 Water St. They were wonderful in helping to choose GF foods!
Dawett India Restaurant at 1435 Ellis St. Seems to be good. I would confirm that the pakora are gluten free, they should be using chickpea flour, check that they are Gf!.
Harvey Ave. [Hwy 97]
Mekong - 1030 Harvey [Hwy 97] Have GF menu! Just before Capri mall, on opposite side
Swiss Chalet - 1475 Hwy 97, just past the Capri mall. Has a GF product list.
Ruby's - 1#110-1950 Harvey [HWY 97 in Spall Plaza. Check that they are rice Noodles
Ozeki-s - #1-1745 Spall They are behind IHOP in the same building as Baxter's Pub.
Mon Thong - near Save-on-Foods [off hwy 97 just before Orchard Park]
Wendy's - 2070 Hwy 97. Has a GF product list. Across the Hwy., just before O. Park.
White Spot - 2190 Hwy 97almost across from O.P. shopping mall. Has a gluten free list.
Milestones - Orchard Park Mall Knowledgeable chefs, best if you can phone in advance
New York Fries - in Food Fair at Orchard Park - "Poutine" with their cheese sauce, which is GF, instead of the gravy. I check their ingredients each time I go there!
Ricky's - [Ramada Inn] 2435 Hwy 97 across from O.P, staff is knowledgeable!
Moxies - 1730 Cooper Staff knowledgeable
Montana's - #400-1500 Banks Road There can be a lot of menu items available for celiacs!
Cactus Club - #200-1575 Banks Rd. Knowledgeable chefs, but you can phone in advance
Eastside Marios - #210 - 1575 Banks Rd. has an allergy menu. Very helpful!
Joey's Global Grill and Lounge - #300-2475 Hwy 97 GF menu, but not many items $$.
Pandosy Street/Lakeshore Drive
Hector's Casa (Mexican) - 2911 Pandosy Have corn tortillas and they make their food from scratch.
Chutney's (Indian) - 3011 Pandosy St & seems to be good. I would confirm that the pakora are gluten free. They should be using chickpea flour check to make sure it is still GF! Indian Food
Lake Tai Restaurant - #101-3010 Pandosy (across from Mandela books) Cater to Celiacs. Their food & service is wonderful. Check their 'vegetarian' meat to make sure it is GF!
Spoon Struck - 018 Tutt St. [which runs parallel to Pandosy St.] just before the Mission Mall
Mahdinas Restaurant - #5- 3045 Tutt St.-tel 250-868-3389. Excel. recom. from Calgary Celiac!
Jakx - #203-595 KLO Rd upstairs above the C.U, at corner of Lakeshore and KLO. Serves a variety of foods. Will provide rice noodles if requested
Fix Café Pasta Bar - #101-3275 Lakeshore, Has delicious. Bouillibase (fish soup) Pricey
The Wild Apple Grill [at Manteo] - 3762 Lakeshore Dr. Very knowledgeable and knew what could be altered for GF.
The Harvest Golf Club - 2725 KLO Rd. They are familiar with cooking for a GF diet.
Michaelbrook Ranch Golf Club - 1085 Lexington [off Gordon Rd] Knowledgeable about Celiac
Kelowna Golf & Country Club - 1297 Glenmore Drive [off Hwy 97]
Gallagher's - 4320 Gallagher Dr. W.
Generally I have had no problem with GF at the Grand, Eldorado, Capri and Ramada. If it is to be a party, I phone ahead and let them know of my special needs!
Second Cup - The drinks are GF, as the creamers contain glucose solids or maltodextrin which comes from corn. The flavours do not have any gluten, either. They are all based on maltodextrin [[GF] as well!
Blenz Coffee - Iced Chocolate and Hot Chocolate NO SPRINKLES (mmmm good!!).
Natural Resources - 525 Bernard Ave,. They have the good selection]
Nature's Fare - 1876 Cooper Rd, same complex as Mon Thong and Save-on-Foods.
Choices - 1937 Hwy 97 [across from London Drugs]-one of our advertisers. Blue stickers on shelves mark the GF items. Their our one of our advertisers!
Springfield Bulk - has a variety of some of the grains and pastas. It is kept clean and each bin has it's own serving utensil.
Mission Park Vitamins - in Mission Park [near Jakx], [near DQ] has bread, muffins, some frozen stuff and a bunch of "dried goods."
Abaco Health. - 3818 Gordon Dr., 250-861-3090 (the corner of Cook and Gordon) Safeway, Save on Foods, Coopers, IGA and Superstore All carry some celiac/diabetic foods in their diet/ethnic section. Ask for a better selection!
La Cucina Pasteria - 121-3640 Gossett, 250-707-0123- [off Hwy 97-on the north side] The best in Westbank!
Fogg'N Suds - 2569 Dobbin Rd.25 - 707-7727, has good salads, a lamb dinner without the rice Pilaf
Cattle Country - 2540 Main St. [on Hwy 97S] 250-768-7879 is very good at helping to choose GF meals
Quail's Gate Winery - 3303 Boucherie Rd., For a pricier GF dinner, they are just fabulous. They are so knowledgeable and so accommodating. Of course, this is a special once in a while meal because its pricey, but it just can't be beat for food, setting and service!
Shopping in Westbank
Natural Harvest Market & Vitamins - 3654 Hoskins [this is on the north side of the Hwy. A little hard to find, but well worth it! Check the freezer for rice flour tortilla. They are trying to improve their stock all the time!
Natures Fare - #34 Carrington Rd. 707-3935 [runs parallel below the Hwy]
Save On - actually has quite a few items: a large selection of (one of the cashiers is celiac). They will slice Freybe's meats (GF) for you even cleaning the cutting blades etc.
Coopers - some GF foods
T-Bones - has some sausages
M&M's - carry GF items, whether the staff is knowledgeable or not I don't know!
Gasthaus on the Lake - 5790 Beach Ave. [main street] 767-6625 This is a great place!
Cosy Bay Seafood Cafe - has GF Fish & Chips 250-494-8711. 13220 N. Victoria Rd. [main Street-?]. I would phone first to get their hours! I also hear there is an ice cream place across the street for dessert!
Shaughnessy's Cove Pub and Restaurant - 12817 S. Lakeshore Dr. 250-494-9448 This is off Hwy 97 in "Lower Summerland". The chef pointed out what was GF.
Zia'a Stonehouse - 14015 Rosedale, 494-1105 - They are both familiar with AND accommodating for gluten-free eating. Very good.
